1. WHAT IS A MAGNEHELIC GAGE?

A mag is a gage that is placed on filter banks to determine when you are supposed to change out the filters.

2. How do I read my magnehelic gage, and why are they based on different inches?

Most HVAC  mag gages are based on 1, 2 or 3 inches.  Most gages are 2 inch gages. A 3 inch gage is used when using HEPA Absolute filters because they start at such a high static and you have to add 1 inch to them. Most HVAC filters are changed out between .75 and 1.25. This is where a 1 and 2 inch gage is used.  This determination is made by whoever is in charge.

3. Why are there fluctuations in my magnehelic gage readings?

Fluctuations can be caused by fans that are very old and not pushing the required CFM through each filter anymore, or other units could have been ducted in over the years that could have reduced CFM flow and cause fluctuations in the mag gage readings, or 100% outside air, and last, but not least, variable speed fans that are not running at 2000 CFM per filter would cause these fluctuations.

4. How can I calculate my magnehelic gage so I can understand it?

When calculating your mag gage, its not recommended to adjust it on the adjustment screw in the front. That is usually used to make sure that everything zeroes out when the unit is off. The very best way to do this is to use the Meyer Global Filter Magnehelic Gage Reading Chart available to you on this website. Just print it out.

5. How do I adjust the variance of the magnehelic gage without adjusting the gage itself?

Scroll down to the Magnehelic Readings and look at examples 1, 2 , and 3 on this page. With this chart, all you have to know is when you want to take out the filters between .75 and 1.25 and what is the actual water gage of the new filter you are putting in. The rest of the information will come from the unit itself.

Each crew member will receive a certificate!
Shown in sample 1 to the left, this filter when installed correctly came out a .31WG
Like it was supposed to , so in this case you would take it out at a .75

****NOTE:  At least 6 out of 10 magnehelic gages are giving out the wrong readings. That's why this is very important if you really want to know when to take your filters out in order to save energy and money.

Shown in sample 2 the gage reading was lower at a .29 than the official reading which should have been .31WG.  So, in this scenario  you would reduce the .75 to .73 for the change out.

Shown in sample 3 the gage reading is .37, the official reading should have been .31WG.  So  for this situation, you would adjust this one higher.   For example, instead of taking out at .75 you would take out at  .81
